It's Portland Startup Week! What better time to get the startup community together?
That's why Built Oregon, PIE, and Silicon Florist is using Startup Week as an opportunity to kick off a new year of Community Hour[s], our ongoing gatherings for all of the people who make up the entrepreneurial fabric of our community. We'll also be joined by our friends Cascade Angels. There is no agenda, panel, or discussion. It’s a time to relax and network with old friends and make new connections with your peers and across industries.
As much as we all love technology, we realize that community relationships are built through personal connections and shared stories. So we hope you’ll join us for a few minutes — or a couple of hours.
This will be a combined event with the XXcelerate Fund Meet 'n' Greet.
"Beer of Trust" is a key signing party with beer, and a chance to hang out and talk about PGP, encryption, and other related things!
What's a key-signing party?A key-signing party is a get-together with PGP users for the purpose of meeting other PGP users and signing each other's keys. This helps to extend the "web of trust" to a great degree. Also, it sometimes serves as a forum to discuss strong cryptography and related issues.
What if I don't have a key yet?If you don't have a PGP key yet, this is a good chance to get your feet wet. If you bring a computer, you can generate a test key at the event and experiment with sending messages to others there. It can be helpful to have someone present to walk you through the process the first time. It is recommended that you only generate a test key at the event, and later generate your real key in private. See below for links to some helpful resources for securely generating a key.
What do I need for this party? If you are bringing a key to sign, then make sure you bring:
At the event, you'll meet others, confirm their key ID in person, and swap key IDs with them. Later when you get home, you can download the full keys and sign them, then upload the signature to the keyserver or email it to them directly.
Part hackathon, part geek social, these biweekly meetings are a time for you to come join others for insight, inspiration or just insanity.
Bring your toys for others to see, or come see what others have been painstakingly chipping away at in their spare time.
Whether it's code or chips, hacking of all sorts is encouraged. But we also like to hear your crazy ideas, so please come join us and bring your willingness to share your brilliance.
We'll be the kids with all the coolest stuff on the table. Hope to see you there.
Designed for tech executives, but welcome to anyone, this meetup is a birds-of-a-feather discussion group for those who are looking to benefit from the shared experience of Vancouver’s tech community. Why so early? Because when you run a company or manage a team, your free time either happens before employees show up for work or at the end of the day (and the last thing you want to do after a day of meetings is entertain a group discussion).
Feel free to bring your breakfast and a mug; we will bring the coffee, creamer, and sugar.
RSVPWake-up and get your creative juices flowing! Join us on Tuesday, February 7th as Shashi Jain takes us through an interactive workshop where you will create a viable concept in about one hour!

In today’s startups and emerging tech companies, we are asked to do more with less, be available 24/7, and act as “team players” as the company finds its market. Within these fast-paced, often male-dominated, environments — with few policies and often unclear reporting hierarchies — our ability to negotiate what we need to be successful is more important than ever.
Join Elizabeth Robillard, local Portland startup leader and VP of Partnerships & Operations at Lytics, for practical advice on how to manage your own career and how to negotiate for yourself more effectively.

The Shape of Revolutions: How Things Change Ellen Friedman | MapR Consultant, Author, and Apache Software Foundation Committer @ellen_friedman
There’s a revolution underway in how people work with data. For one thing, streaming data is no longer seen as a special use case – and that’s a good thing because streaming is a better fit to the way life happens. Stream-first architectures are useful even beyond real-time processing. Another big idea has to do with where data lives: the big data revolution showed us that data structures spanning more than one machine are a good thing. But a new revolution involves data structures that span more than one continent (geo-distribution) and that go from on-premise to cloud.
In this talk, Ellen will tell a few stories that show how innovation with real impact can happen, including the shift in thinking and in engineering culture that underlie successful change. We’ll look at emerging technologies and how best to use them, new designs in architecture, and flexible practices such as a microservices style that have huge implications in IoT and other large-scale analytical workflows.
During the 10th installment of “The Perfect Pitch,” Tom Kingsley will cover the final installment – Exit and Ask
The Exit and Ask will consist of: How you expect to cash investors out, recent comparable examples, basic ask terms, the amount, form of investment, bullet points on use of funds.
Pitch Club is an ongoing series where entrepreneurs can practice their pitch and business plan. Tom Kingsley creates a dynamic and realistic environment to deeply understand what the investors are looking for and role-play being an investor to other entrepreneurs.
There is no need to have attended the other installments to attend this one – we look forward to seeing you there!

Please join us for a colloquium reviewing and discussing results of the recent Augmented/Virtual Reality Residency held at Oregon Story Board. Participating artists will be attending via Skype or in person as schedule permits; the agenda includes both artist presentations as well as group discussion amongst all attendees.
The colloquium will combine a review of residents’ research and experimentation during the residency with discussion centered on topics such as: What does AR/VR allow artists to do that wasn’t possible before? Does the technology contribute positively, negatively, or neutrally to artistic practice? Are the technologies tools, mediums, subject matter or does it not matter? How does AR/VR expand and provoke artistic capabilities?
The objective of the colloquium is to share learning of the residents and organizers with a broader group, and to inject that group's experiences and questions into future iterations of the residency. Results will be summarized in a short record of proceedings for public release a few weeks after the colloquium.
Attendance is limited to approximately 30 participants. You are not required to attend for the entire day.
If your ability to attend changes, please send a note to welcome@upforgallery.com.
