Women in Startups: Negotiating for yourself

In today’s startups and emerging tech companies, we are asked to do more with less, be available 24/7, and act as “team players” as the company finds its market. Within these fast-paced, often male-dominated, environments — with few policies and often unclear reporting hierarchies — our ability to negotiate what we need to be successful is more important than ever.

Join Elizabeth Robillard, local Portland startup leader and VP of Partnerships & Operations at Lytics, for practical advice on how to manage your own career and how to negotiate for yourself more effectively.

Whether you are looking for new opportunities such as a promotion, better work/life balance, buy-in on a new project, more support, or credit for your work, this talk will offer concrete strategies on how to reach your goals.

NOTE: Men are welcome to attend, as well.

Coffee and bagels will be provided.

Nailing Your People Ops From the Start
You’ve got your idea - maybe you’ve even built it already. You might have hired on employee #2, or #20. Wherever you are in your startup’s journey, your journey is powered by your people. Great people build amazing products, and amazing products build world-class companies. However, there’s a catch: great people aren’t just going to show up, and they’re certainly not going to stay without the right ecosystem. Come learn about setting up your people operations and human resource functions early on the right way (it’s not all about compliance and salaries!) If you’ve ever hired someone for your company or you will be soon - no matter the size of your startup - this event is for you!

Write The Docs PDX

The Write The Docs NA conference returns to Portland in May, and the deadline for proposals is February 10 (midnight PST).

For the third year, we'll give people who want to propose a chance to test things out, either by speaking briefly, or by brainstorming their proposals.

FYI, O'Reilly has an excellent guide to creating conference proposals, "Propose, Prepare, Present". If you navigate to http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920027096.do, you can get the eBook version for free.

We'll start with a brief networking session from 6-6:30.

At 6:30, I'll make a few announcements. Anyone who wants to try out a "preview" of a conference talk (5-10 min), or just present their draft proposal for comments, can speak to the group (or ask questions) after that.

The Shape of Revolutions: How Things Change Ellen Friedman | MapR Consultant, Author, and Apache Software Foundation Committer @ellen_friedman

There’s a revolution underway in how people work with data. For one thing, streaming data is no longer seen as a special use case – and that’s a good thing because streaming is a better fit to the way life happens. Stream-first architectures are useful even beyond real-time processing. Another big idea has to do with where data lives: the big data revolution showed us that data structures spanning more than one machine are a good thing. But a new revolution involves data structures that span more than one continent (geo-distribution) and that go from on-premise to cloud.

In this talk, Ellen will tell a few stories that show how innovation with real impact can happen, including the shift in thinking and in engineering culture that underlie successful change. We’ll look at emerging technologies and how best to use them, new designs in architecture, and flexible practices such as a microservices style that have huge implications in IoT and other large-scale analytical workflows.
